Confession time... I'm a bit obsessed with planning kids birthday parties. From the invitations to the decorations, everything needs to co-ordinate and follow a theme. For John's 1st Birthday it was In The Night Garden and for his 2nd Birthday it was Mickey Mouse. So when it came to David's 1st Birthday, you can bet I was brainstorming for themes pretty much as soon as he was born! After briefly considering a Very Hungry Caterpillar party, it soon became obvious that the only option was a Bumble Bee Party.

The first thing David ever took an interest to on TV was The Bee Movie, which miraculously settles him whenever he's not in the best of moods. That and The Hive are always guaranteed to hold his attention, so a black and yellow theme with plenty of home made lovelies, for a little get together with family & friends, was the only way to go!

It started with a simple bumble bee invitation and soon morphed into bees made from polystyrene eggs, tissue paper pom poms, a handmade Happy 1st Beeday banner and black & yellow circle paper garlands. And of course, like every birthday before, there was the cake! The boys Granny out did herself once more with a beautiful bee hive cake, complete with yellow (vanilla) & black (chocolate) sponge on the inside. The little bees made of icing on the cake & cupcakes were a particular favourite with the kid of the party.

David had a great time at his little Bumble Bee Party. It was only a few close friends & family, given the size of our house, but Iain stilled seemed to think he was feeding the whole of Edinburgh with a spread of pulled pork, lentil soup, sandwiches, sausages, crisps & various other little buffet foods. We literally had two tables full of food, one of which was the coffee table where David spend about 90% of the party, helping himself to cheese cubes (& spitting out the pickled onions...), sausages and cheesy puff crisps! John also had a great time, playing with his friends & cousin, as well as helping unwrap all his David's new toys.

  1. That invitation is brilliant! and how amazing is that cake? I don't think we'll be having proper party decorations until our boys are a little older but I can imagine myself getting a bit obsessed with theme. Looks like such a wonderful occasion xx
